3 hour Mini Sessions – 1.5hrs Each
The Growing Brain: From Birth to 5 years Unit five is a three-hour training to provide knowledge of how social emotional development unfolds in the first 5 years and inform educators of the brain’s role in this process. This unit covers:
- how the developing brain is affected by children’s interactions with the people in their lives;
- how adults play a critical role in supporting young children’s social- emotional development; and
- how the brain connections are experience dependent, reflecting how early experiences last a lifetime.
Training Objectives:
- To demonstrate the understanding how Social-Emotional Development Unfolds in the First Five Years and How to support it in young children
- Identify the areas of the brain involved in social interactions and emotional reactions
- Understand the role of relationships and attachment in social emotional development
- Understand the effect of stress on social and emotional development
- Understand the development of empathy
Learning Outcomes:
- Report how babies, toddler and preschoolers develop social emotional skills
- Explain what is going on with young children as they use their brain to think and interact with their world.
- Identify the areas of the brain involved in social interactions and emotional reactions
- List the role of relationships and attachment in the social emotional development
- Discuss the effect of stress on social emotional development
- Describe the adult’s role in supporting children’s social emotional development
Attendance: Participants must pre-register for this training series and are expected to attend workshops as scheduled. The workshop is 3.5 hours set to meet the training goals and objectives. Certificates will reflect actual time of attendance. Refund will not be issued for time and attendance for which the participant was not present.
Attendance is of highest importance. Each participant is responsible for their attendance during the agreed upon time. No refunds will be issued. This training series is a total of 3.5 hours. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each training session and a head count will be conducted at the end of the session. Participation and interactions are encouraged. Make up plans are scheduled when facility, concerns or weather does not permit for the training session to be conducted.
Learning Activities: Videos, PowerPoint slides, Interactive activites, review of current practices, journaling, note taking. Individual reflection, building-creating projects, chat group interaction, productive planning, action to apply to practices, open-ended questioning, whole-group- small group interaction, posting information, question and answer session and conferencing help guide the participant to the set learning objectives.
Adult Learning Principles: The materials as outline in the Zero to Three Growing brain manual uses the adult learning theory principles. Zero to three designed this program for use by early childhood professionals who have experiences conducting training for teaching staff. In order to provide training using the curriculum the potential trainer submits a request to apply to become a credential consultant and then attends the trainer for trainers 2-day training. The provisional consultant is training in the content of brain development, all training objectives, training delivery and how to employ the principles of adult learning theory. The support team and the trainers network resources provided by Zero to three, includes intense training and support in strategies for working effectively with adult learners. Zero to three has outlined several features that assist trainers to meet the needs of adult learners who register for the growing brain sessions.
Module activites build on participant’s’ prior experiences in child development, scenarios and outlines and explanations brain development, which includes connections to real life situations.
The training address multiple learning styles. Activities include opportunites for participants to listen to information provided by the trainer or web conference host, as well as to see information on their handouts. Participant manuals, the PowerPoints slides. Shared Conference screens and access to materials prior to the training date assist the adult learning in the opportunity to become comfortable with the content and engage the important as active members of the learning community. There are hands-on activities, such as practice observations, recording, review of task, small-group discussion-chat rooms in webhosting, and reflection of practices. (Just to name a few more… work group- opportunites to share and questions information using exploration, constructive actions and play). Video clips, Posting, Word Cards, Visual and Audio Aides that the trainers use to demonstrate early childhood professional’s ability to plan and implement the learning objectives into their professional practice.
The trainer’s or webhost’s role is to provide information as well as to facilitate- guide participants, as each participant reflects and construct their level of understanding toward the learning objectives. The facilitator will assess and scaffold learning and progress. The goals of the training are the how and the what will be explored, and the objectives is the journey along with the end of the road results of the time spent.
Each module is aimed toward specific learners’ outcomes, and participants have opportunities to demonstrate their competency in meeting and implementing the set outcomes through observable activities, feedback, reporting, reflection, assessment, action plans, as well as assignments completed during the training sessions.
Each training session has a list of highlighted suggestion in the trainer’s manual to support the trainer’s task to observe reactions, and to assist the participant who are disengaged, distracted, to
help regain the group in the ability to become active successful in gaining strategies. Thus, the early childhood participant can connect with the learning process, to find ways to integrate the growing brain research finding into each day.
A variety of teaching methodologies are suggested in each module- large and small-group discussion, mini-lectures, work in small groups, round-robin, brainstorming, fact finding, text-walks, crosswalks,
The zero to three trainers’ manual outlines how the trainer can alter the activities to support the adult learner and meet the individualized needs of participants. There are terms explanations of specific training strategies used in each module. These training strategies provides tips for both eLearning, webhosting and conference training formats. Zero to Three has a member connect and consultant support group meeting to support the trainer in the delivery and planning. There is daily weekly, monthly and quarterly access to the Zero to Three team.
Training Schedule: The Zero to Three Growing Brain Professional Development Series are grounded in sound theorical and philosophical based and structured as a coherent and systematic program focused on best practice and research. This training is organized as a series of sessions, 1.5-3.5 hours in length. Each module provides information on understanding, purpose, application and monitoring skills sets. Educators can integrate with their current knowledge and skillset; they then apply this information through guided activities during and following each session. The cohort model and the Training group Series will be encouraged to attend all 7 session within a two-week break between scheduled session. Open sessions will allow participants to set their own time frame and interest in registering for additional sessions.
Training Format:
- Web-Conferencing: Registration and Applications for Scheduled Instructor-led Training Session @ eLearning4edu.com. Handouts, Participant Manuel, Session Materials and Agenda Sheet via Google Classroom, Google Shared Drive, Mail or Email and elearnng4edu.com dashboard-participant’s assigned account. Web-conference set up via skype, zoom or google hangout. Participant must have access to internet connection using satellite or Wi-Fi. Link to hosted web event will be shared with those who enrolled for the scheduled event. (Access to training content will be available upon registration, Training event and activities during the event will be the training session.) There will be no certificate for those who did not complete the training session. 2. eLearning format for individual seeking a self-study, for the growing brain, is not offered at this time. Participants who attend the eLearning information sessions will not be given a certificate of training. This posted training is to support those who are assigned to coach and within the coaching sessions their professional development will occur. The activities during coaching sessions will support the learner in meeting the learning objectives. 3. Onsite- Conference Professional Training formats: Registration is offered for onsite group training. Documents and Training Materials available onsite, or prior to engagement via Google Share Drive. Setup Supplies and Equipment: Many activities involve discussion in dyads, triads, and small group groups. Therefore, the chat room for web design sessions, optimal room arrangement is often incorporated to the room set-up. The growing brain model, chart paper, markers and posting cards are needed for all trainings and training types, the key points outline, recorded of group responses following activities, and document issues to address at the end of the session or through other means. A computer, LCD, Projector, TV screen, smartboard, stand and screen are required for onsite training formats.
Training participants are requested to prepare their learning experience, should have their training manual, supplies for notetaking, markers, concentration aides, playdough, clay, crayons, small manipulatives and comfort items. Web access, Computer or tablet with audio and visual capabilities.
Assessment and Supports to Participants and Post Attendees: Participants are asked to complete post-session assessment for all modules and training formats. Plans of actions to plan and implement change, self-assessment and follow-up needs assessment are forms at the end of the session that provide valuable feedback about the trainer and trainees. Early Childhood Coaching support is available, and Specialist have office hours to assist with post session supports. Our team of professional seek to support and strengthen educator’s role in making the most of their training. Post Session Supports are accessible to help members to create their professional development plan, help participants me productive and committed early childhood professionals.
Graphics and Diversity: The Zero to Three Growing Brain is a curriulum manual published by the National Zero to Three Organization. All graphics, videos and Guidance information is published to support best practices and to share research finding. Code of professional standards and cultural respect is in alignment with vales, diversity, uniqueness, and abilities of all children and families is void of stereotypes or biases. Zero to three organization is a recognized leader in the early childcare profession.
Navigation Elements: Course pages are navigated using scroll or tabs, the access to conferences and participation in discussion requires a novice understanding. Each course session has a demo and support from assigned host is available before and during the session. The course is interactive with other participants who are guided by the instructor.
Visual Design Information on the screen is in large font 12-15, view and screen sharing are part of this session, camera view of host and participants; the aide of control of visual and audio information can be adjusted by host and participant. Colors and background information can be adjusted for proper lighting. The participant manual is a guide that can be printed by the participant if desired.
Course Completion: The course is a scheduled event where all participants and host will begin and end at the same time. The participant will have access to review the material and keep documents in their individual dashboard. Course can be access after the hosted session.
Language and Written Information; The Growing Brain materials are published by the Zero to Three press team. There is a glossy of terms, abbreviations are spelled out -noted within documentation. Information is clear, examples are given, and questions are asked- to connect information and participant’s understanding. The trainer guides the understanding and knowledge within the given activities. Participants understanding is accessed during various points within the training. Chat notes can be used, and participants can ask question to get clarification during the hosted virtual training experience.
Courses Assessment
The learning objectives are assessed by the trainer as outlined in the various activites and interactions. This training provides task, discussion and reflection that validates the participant’s level of understanding and ability to align their professional practice with standards. There are checkpoints within the training to gather feedback from the participant. At the end of the training there are reflective questions that review and request for constructive feedback. Course evaluations and action plans serve as additional knowledge to determine if learning objectives were met. There questions and refection statements are viewed by the host and response questions are scored using a rubric.
Technology Statement: The Course is located on a secured website owned and monitored by the training organization. Links to articles are subscribed from Exchange press and Zero to three. The Trainer and owner of early childhood connections is a Zero to Three consultant and has met the credentialing process to train using the zero to three growing brain curriculum training manuals.
