The Growing Brain Unit 4: Cognition and Executive Function Zero to Five Brain Development

The Growing Brain Training Series: From Birth to 5 years Unit 1-7 is a set of, three-hour training sessions, for a total of 21 hours of professional development. This training activity is set to help educators learn information and to learn how to use a developmental perspective of how the parts of the brain function. Our discussion will be centered around the parts of the brain, the function of the brain, and the role of early experiences in making connections between areas of the brain. We will engage in a small group, large group, and self-refection interactions to reach the set training objectives.
The goal of this training is to review how young children develop cognitive and executive functions in relation to the developing brain. We will examine how early childcare professionals can support children’s overall learning and development.
Participants will engage in various activities to explore four objectives:
- Learn how cognitive development unfolds.
- Learn the ways to support cognitive development in young children and overall development
- Learn the ways to Support the Development of the Executive Functions.
- To define cognitive development and Name what task in the learning environment will support cognitive skills.
- Review and report the milestones in the cognitive-developmental domain
- To create a lesson plan and weekly planning template support interactions that focus on cognitive outcomes.
- To Define Executive Function and to Create Thematic Learning Plans and use questions to generate Higher Order Thinking Skills.

- Introduction: Hello, My Name Is… (15 minutes)
- Objective 1: Learn How Cognitive Development Unfolds (55 Minutes)
- Objective 2: Learn Ways to Support Cognitive Development in Young Children (30 minutes)
- Break (10 Minutes)
- Objective 3: Learn about Executive Functioning and its Critical Role in Cognitive and Overall Development (40 minutes)
- Objective 4: learn Ways to Support the Development of Executive Functions (20 minutes)
- Closing (10 minutes)
Attendance: Participants must pre-register for this training series and are expected to attend workshops as scheduled. The workshop is 3.5 hours set to meet the training goals and objectives. Certificates will reflect the actual time of attendance. Refunds will not be issued for time and attendance for which the participant was not present.
Attendance is of the highest importance. Each participant is responsible for their attendance. No refunds will be issued. This training series is a total of 3.5 hours. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each training session and a headcount will be conducted at the end of the session. Participation and interactions are encouraged. Makeup plans are scheduled when facility, concerns, or weather does not permit for the training session to be conducted.
