Developmentally Appropriate Practice: Core Considerations / 5 Hours

Interest in learning and participating in activities that lead to best practices. Participants are responsible for registration and purchase of books and supplies.
Course Description:
Developmentally Appropriate Practice is a fundamental guide for all those who work with young children. It provides teachers the opportunity to use a framework to help teachers use a framework to understand how young children can benefit from both child and adult guided interactions. It supports play, intentionally teaching practices, child focus instruction, explorative learning models as methods for content learning. Participants will be guided through (7) interactions, group discussion, self-reflection, open ended questions, small group interviews, text reading, videos and slides, projected learning objectives and review of professional practices.

Text The third edition of Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Program (Carol Coppie & Sue Bredekamp 2009) one each Participant, Participant Notebook and Binder for Handouts and reference resources. Module 1 Slides with embedded video clips, Chart paper and Makers Arrival Chart and dot stickers.
Attendance:
Participants must pre-register for this training series, and they are expected to attend workshops as scheduled. The participants are responsible for their attendance and are expected to actively present during the agreed upon dates and times.
Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each session and a head count will be conducted at the end of each session. Participants are responsible for the attendance and no refunds will be provide for missed, late, absences, no shows, leaving before end of scheduled time etc.… Participants are responsible for gaps in attendance. Early Childhood Connections will not pay back funds to payment sources for any participant who has registered and fails to attend sessions as scheduled. Participants are responsible to adhere to professional attendance practices. Participants maybe asked to leave or be withdrawn from program. Participants who withdraw from training after registration are still responsible for payment. Participants must be present for the full 5 hours of training.
Session One: The CORE Considerations of Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP)
Goal One: To explain the history of developmentally appropriate practice and Why DAP is critical for high quality childhood programs.
Goal Two: To identify the concepts in the NAEYC Developmentally Appropriate Practice Position Statement.
Goal Three: To describe teaching practices that are appropriate to children’s age and developmental status, address the unique needs of individual children, and are responsive to the social and cultural context in which children live.
Learning Objectives:
As a result of session one participant will be able to:
- To define developmentally appropriate practices
- Describe the guidelines for the “Mariners’ Star” as it relates to DAP
- Identify the facets of the teacher’s role that promotes children’s learning and development and enable them to reach important goals
Apply the principles and guidelines of developmentally appropriate practice in work with young children and families.

- Self-Reflection: How comfortable am I with DAP? – 20 minutes
- Charting (Small group Warm-Up) What do we know about Developmentally Appropriate Practice? – 25 minutes
- Three Videos and Feedback – 35 minutes
- Defending and Finding DAP as part of our practices and daily routines – 25 minutes
- Handout and Whole Group Sharing Core Considerations of DAP – 30 minutes
- Text walk Look at what in our best practice book – 45minutes
- Understanding the book and a resource and Guide – 60minutes
- Summary and Wrap Up- Application of Learning Objectives – 20 minutes
